Particles under stress: ultrasonication causes size and recovery rate artifacts with soil-derived POM but not with microplastics

چکیده

Abstract. The breakdown of soil aggregates and the extraction particulate organic matter (POM) by ultrasonication density fractionation is a method widely used in (SOM) analyses. It has recently also been for microplastic from samples. However, investigation POM physiochemical properties ecological functions might be biased if particles are comminuted during treatment. In this work, different types POM, which representative terrestrial ecosystems anthropogenic influences, were tested their structural stability face range 0 to 500 J mL−1. occluded (oPOM) an agricultural forest as well pyrochar showed significant reduction particle size at ≥50 mL−1 average factor 1.37±0.16 concurrent recovery rates 21.7±10.7 % when being extracted. Our results imply that increasing causes retention within sedimenting phase, leading misinterpretation certain fractions more strongly bound oPOM or part mineral-associated (MOM). This could, example, lead false estimation physical stabilization. contrast, neither fresh nor weathered polyethylene (PE), terephthalate (PET) polybutylene adipate (PBAT) microplastics rate after application ultrasound. We conclude applied soils no impact on distribution thus provides valuable tool assessment aggregates.

Poliovirus Particles do not Form in Preinfected Cells with Reovirus

Background and Aims: Inhibition of viral growth in coinfected cells with two different viruses has been described. This phenomenon known as viral interference can occur in several virus host systems such as interference of enterovirus infection on poliovirus vaccine strains. In this study we superinfected reovirus infected HeLa cells with poliovirus to determine if poliovirus can replicate in s...

Pretreatment with ultrasonication reduces the size of azelaic acid-chitosan nanoparticles prepared by electrospray

Nowadays, electrospray is becoming a favourable approach for preparing monodispersed nanoparticles. However, this approach is quite recent and requires further works to optimize control over physicochemical properties of its products. This study aimed to determine the possible effects of sonication as a pretreatment to reduce the size of azelaic acid-chitosan particle before using electrospray....
